this movie was so fucking good that i dont think people will ever understand it. billy bob was amazing and tony shalhoub was really fucking good. coen fucking brothers.

One of the Coen brothers' very best works . . . a melancholic homage to noir that pits a hapless anti-hero against a world he does not understand. I don't think any other film articulates my personal worldview so clearly.

an incredible piece of film, not only for the haunting noir story, but the stunning cinematography, possibly roger deakin's greatest achievements yet. the coen's have made easily one of the best films of the decade, not to mention a personal triumph for them - (it easily tops my list of coen movies, possibly only matched by 'no country for old men.') i am flabbergasted at the lack of awards this movie received - only ONE oscar nomination? (albeit a well-deserved onefor cinematography). its a quiet, reserved story with small bits of coen-type humor and devices that fit so perfectly with the style, yet it is so convincingly presented that you really forget you are watching a film at all.

Brilliant casting and acting in this Nor-Cal set Cohen Brothers masterpiece. Does Crane have a lit cigarette in EVERY single scene? I think he does. What's even better is that his "dialog" almost doesn't exist. I love the misery and depression set against the abundance of the post-war "boom." You can see why they chose Gandolfini for the Sopranos after watching this...

A dark, brooding, and witty noir full of memorable characters and performances. The Coen bros and Roger Deakins go all in with the black and white photography--lush settings gleam as characters converse in shadows and the light that trickles in through cracks. "The Man Who Wasn't There" hardly has one false note, don't miss it, "before it all just washes away".
