Alec Guiness is perfectly charming as the apparently meek Bank supervisor with a dream he desperately wants to fulfill in this fabulous comedy.

Challenging The Man in the White Suit as my favourite Ealing comedy, Alec Guinness yet again proves himself to be an utter genius, this time partnered with the equally superb Stanley Holloway. The pair make ridiculously loveable crooks, that it's easy to root for them, even when they're stealing from children. Magnificent.

I've heard this is the best Ealing Comedy ever, which sounded like a boast akin to 'the highest mountain in Holland', but this one is actually very entertaining. I wouldn't go as far as to call it much of a comedy, but the plot brings a mild smirk now and again. The scene at the Eiffel Tower and the car chase are almost exciting and I enjoyed it far more than I expected to.

A wonderful little heist film. While it was listed as a comedy, I never really laughed much; more of funny situations than jokes. The story is brilliant, and a great ending. It's fun to see Obi Wan in other films. He is very good as an awkward, mild-mannered bank employee who sits in the back of a van that transports gold bars. He has been doing this job for years, all the while plotting the perfect crime. Of course things don't go as planned, and the resulting events are very well developed, easily earning the Academy Award for best story & screenplay, and justifiable settling for a nomination for best actor, losing to Gary Cooper in High Noon. Highly recommended.
