GOOD MOVIE. JUST DIDNT DO THAT GOOD AT THE BOX OFFICE.

Completely disturbing and mesmerizing. Harrison Ford's best performance and my favorite Peter Weir film. It also features a beautifully melancholy performance by a young River Phoenix. The film is almost as dark and disturbing as the book, but not quite.

When I saw this movie as a teenager I thought it was a pretty cool critique of American society and I identified with the River Phoenix character who enjoys the adventure of being dragged out with this family to a remote island by his old man. Having just watched it again, I have a totally different take: Now, the father figure, Harrison Ford, comes off like the quintessential crack-pot American inventor who jeopardizes the safety of his family to pursue some narcissistic fantasy of living off the land. It still holds up though, and its pro-environment/anti-immigrant message actually seems pretty relevant. Worth a revisit.

Probably one of my favorite performances outta Ford. Brave, rare & vulnerable. An overall great cast, story and still poignant even today.
