Takes me back to my childhood and makes me nostalgic for London. An unusual Mike Leigh film in that it actually has some sort of story to it. The story gives the film focus so there's little room for fluff however Mike Leigh fluff are the tiny details in which a Londoner like me can appreciate. A good film for people who don't "get" Mike Leigh.

Being a Mike Leigh film a lot of the scenes were improvised, but it really pays off as the way events unfold feels really natural and credible.

Quietly speaking volumes, Imelda Staunton and director Mike Leigh lead a groundbreaking cast to deliver a heartbreaking performance.

This film very much advocates a controversial subject that i am very sternly against. That being said, i don't judge a movie on it's views or message. I judge it on quality of the storytelling and acting. This movie is brilliant in both senses. The story weaves along in a very believable way illuminating our heroine's fate. Said heroine, played tremendously by Imelda Staunton is a power house. She give the kind of performance that deserves awards, even the coveted Oscar. She got the recognition but lost out to Hilary Swank respectively. Staunton makes us feel for this character, makes us understand her, and in a way, love her. Not in a romantic way, but in the reverence and respect of a good mother. This film not only speaks on abortion, it also hints tones on forgiveness and the importance of family. A brilliant, brilliant work all around.

Exquisitely crafted movie. Rarely do you find a movie with such authentic and compelling characters. If you enjoy a slice of social history cira London 1951 then this movie is for you. The drama is poignant and genuine and will tug at your heart from beginning to end. Cockney accent can be sometimes hard to understand especially when it is masked by ambient city noises. I turned on the subtitles in English.
