The Color Purple (1985)

An epic tale spanning forty years in the life of Celie, an African-American woman living in the South who survives incredible abuse and bigotry. After Celie's abusive father marries her off to the equally debasing 'Mister' Albert Johnson, things go from bad to worse, leaving Celie to find companionship anywhere she can. I remember watching this when I was younger and it felt so long, I think because they kept replaying it on television, it was a bit overbearing, but it's a well done film, takes you to the darker realities. It's also an experience, a bad experience of your own sympathizing with the characters. It also felt more like an indulgence in bad memories, rather than the telling of a tale. (And I must point out how much Oprah could pass for Whoppi 's grandmother in this film and they are practically the same age.)

Waht can you say about this film that hasn't already been said. I can still remember how I felt seeing this movie at the old Cielo Vista Mall 2 screen movie theater with my mom. One of the first times I remember seeing her cry. In college our group watched this film at least once a week during the summer. Everytime we're together someone, to this day, throws out a line.

Multigenerational abuse, dissociative identity disorder, and Oprah fights back! Hope she does so in real life too. Excellent and profound. The abusers dl'd their tactics via envy of the ruling class- visual storytelling.
