Salles and Thomas tritely conflate evangelism, soccer and crime as hollow alternatives for the characters, who end up reduced to static sacrificial lambs just so the filmmakers can state, restate and underline their suffering-poor points.

Film Brazil yg bagus bgt. Ttg kehidupan seorang ibu (hamil tua, bekerja sebagai pembantu) dan 4 anak laki2-nya di kota Sao Paolo, Brazil, dengan segala permasalahan mereka masing2. Anak tertua seorang kurir pengantar barang, ada dinho yang religius, dario yg ingin jadi pemain bola profesional dan anak terkecil reginaldo yg terobsesi dengan ayahnya yg tak pernah ia kenal. Walao banyak tokoh, pendalaman karakternya dpt bgt, masing2 bisa menarik kita untuk hanyut kedalam kisah mereka. Mungkin karena castingnya tepat. Manteb. Lalu yg keren juga, Scoringnya! So damn Beautiful.

Very well-done "coming of age" movie by Brazilian director Walter Salles. It tells the story of four young boys and their (pregnant again) mother who raises them in a very poor neighborhood of Sao Paulo. Options for the young men are very few but all fight to have a little piece of their dream and hope to gain some respect in life.

My building was one of the sets... a typical middle class building in SP. The director is the great Walter Salles (with Daniela Thomas). The first movie (for me) with 5 protagonists. Worth watching if you appreciate Brazilian movie... or if you wanna know about Brazil.
