It's a true and emotional story about the resilience of a child, growing in a dysfunctional family and with an abusive and violent mother. Natascha McElhone gives a very strong performance as the bullying mother, which is surprising given her beauty. The themes addressed in the film are interesting and question social policy, foster care, dysfunctional families, the importance of a support network. But the film only partially carries the emotions to the screen. The narrative structure feels often more like a disconnected collection of scenes rather than a story, failing to completely involve us and weakening the impact of the film. Although Kevin Lewin goes through some gruesome and difficult moments in his life, the film is never hopeless.

I don't know this isn't really the kind of movie i normally like, and i think it lacked something there were only a few parts that I found were worth watching most of the acting was unbelievable & that's a complete fail in a movie based on a true story, altho i think Ioan Gruffudd did do a wonderfull job It just could have been so much more in total

Although there are a few nice-ish cameos - Ioan Gruffudd pops up, as do James Fox and Jodie Whittaker - it's not enough to save this film from itself or give it any kind of emotional authenticity.

Till when will film makers realize "based on a true story" is nothing. On the contrary, the script has to be double outstanding to impress its viewers. I am not sure how much Kevin Lewis (the "true character", the original biography author, plus the (adapted) screenplay writer of this film) had intervened during production, it just looks so strange & inconsistent in the whole. Bad adaptation, bad directing & bad acting of the leading Rupert Friend.
