Till when will film makers realize "based on a true story" is nothing. On the contrary, the script has to be double outstanding to impress its viewers. I am not sure how much Kevin Lewis (the "true character", the original biography author, plus the (adapted) screenplay writer of this film) had intervened during production, it just looks so strange & inconsistent in the whole. Bad adaptation, bad directing & bad acting of the leading Rupert Friend.

I didn't watch the whole film. It was told in flashback and in the modern part of the story a man is hell-bent on committing suicide. So it's a trip down memory lane while the pills kick in. Don't know about anyone else but that's a bit of a buzzkill beginning to a film and it also gives away the ending too, which is unsporting. The best bit was Ioan Gruffudd in a Scouse accent being a cool teacher. Not much backstory, he tried to help the beaten up school boy, who then gets moved to another school. I watched for a few minutes after that scene, in vain, hoping Ioan Gruffudd might reappear, but no. Sorry to everyone else in this film, you're just not as much fun to watch. I'm working through all of Ioan Gruffudd's film career and life's too short to watch some hideous misery-lit memoir made into a film.

Nick Moran directs a film that half the time has a lot of sincerity in it's structure and deals with the subject matter that's based on a true story brilliantly. The other half rams it's melodramatic tone down your throat!

A decent low budget film, strongly supported by its cast, but occassionally let down by its budget and some iffy directorial choices (i.e. the classroom detention scene: Nice idea, doesn't work). Whilst a harrowing true story its miz-lit origins shine through, so for most part its depressing viewing, whilst there's something about the ending which doesn't quite ring true (taking on a mob-boss with no consequences?). Natascha McElhone's performance is completely overlooked - personally, I thought she was brilliant; completely unrecognisible. Its a fair story of good triumphing over evil, but it can be a harsh, grim slog at times.

Difficult-to-watch film about what abuse is like and it's knock-on effects to both the abused and his dealings with others. This is not sexual abuse. It is worse, if that is possible. I was going to compare it to "The Pursuit of Happyness" but "Pursuit" is too casual a drama to merit it. This is rough. Most any parent will cringe; most any friend will regret. A bit of a happy ending without the schmaltz. Definitely recommend.
