The Hired Hand (1971)

Harry Collings returns home to his farm after drifting with his friend, Arch. His wife, who had given up on him, reluctantly allows him to stay, and soon believes that all will be well again. But then Harry has to make a difficult decision regarding his loyalties and priorities.

This is definitely not the type of film that will appeal to mass audiences. This moody and very slow western film is nevertheless beautifully shot, bathed in one of the most amazing cinematography possible. The cast is really good and manages to feel authentic in every situations. It's a far cry from the usual action packed western films that tend to glorify the old west, while here everything feels rough and dusty, life seems to only hold by a string and men are like hungry wolf, dry and quiet. I'm very glad I had the opportunity to watch this film because it's filled with amazing allegories, symbolisms and the dialogues are quite smart. The scene between Fonda and Bloom breathe an authenticity and a bitterness rarely achieved in films. This is an excellent film from another era depicting a time that has long been forgotten by all of us. Beautiful and unique.

Stunning western revisionism, beautifully layered photography by Vilmos Szigmond... this movie more attempts to give an historical portrait of the old west without any false romanticism or John Wayne heroism. The action slows to a crawl, people seldom shoot properly, and the cast are flyspecks next to the trees and mountains. One of the finest of the "new westerns" of the 70s, and man, were there lots.

A thinking man's western. I can't put into words how much i appreciate this film. Zgsmond's photography is remarkable. Bruce Langhorne's score is amazing. If you don't see the movie (which you should), at least give the soundtrack a listen.

Great film. Perfect cinematography, especially for the era. One of the top films of the early 1970's and possibly the most accurate/believable westerns ever made.
