Bone Tomahawk (2015)

During a shootout in a saloon, Sheriff Hunt injures a suspicious stranger. The doctor's assistant, wife of the local foreman, tends to him in prison. That night, the town is attacked and they both disappear—only the arrow of a cannibal tribe is found. Hunt and a few of his men go in search of the prisoner and the foreman's wife.

This is the way movies of this ilk are supposed to be made. It's for humans that have attention spans. It sets things up so you actually care about the characters and what they are doing. It increases the tension by making you wait for it. It's a slow, savory burn...like a good stogie. I'm sure it won't be a huge box office champion for just that reason. It doesn't have constant CGI things buzzing around, blowing stuff up, from start to finish. It actually has a plot and characters with some substance. Very doubtful that anyone is examining every frame of its trailer to figure out as much as they can about the film before going to see it. It didn't have a talking racoon. In other words, it was fantastic.

A slow burning adventure of thrill, mystery and horror. With great characters and atmosphere it manages to keep your attention regardless of the pace, resulting in one of the most brutal final acts a western would ever manage to push itself to.

Awesome western with a little thriller/horror like splash at the end. The characters are all super great. The acting is also really good on all parts. Definitely recommended.

Bone Tomahawk is what so many films today aren't: Honest, Gritty, Unforgiving, and Unapologetic, all while creating a narrative and truly making the audience CARE about the characters about whom the story is told. With today's endless focus on a barrage of over-the-top special effects, concurrent A, B, C, and D plots, and general feeling of "just throw noises and colors at them, they'll forget what's happening and just eat more popcorn" it's a joy to see a film take the time to truly tell a tale. As an added bonus, Craig Zahler delivers a completely uncensored visual that shows what true horror can be. (not for the feint of heart). 5 out of 5 would definitely watch anything with Zahler's name attached (yes, even the Puppetmaster installment he did).
