Heaven's Gate (1980)

Harvard graduate James Averill serves as the sheriff of prosperous Jackson County, Wyoming, standing at the center of a conflict between impoverished immigrants and affluent cattle farmers. Politically connected ranchers enlist mercenary Nathan Champion—who is also vying for the affections of local madam Ella Watson—to combat the immigrant uprising. As tensions escalate, both Averill and Champion start to question their decisions.

The last real American epic has stood the test of time and all the blinkered critics who so turned against Heaven's Gate when it appeared. Other films after this were bigger money wasters and disasters, and not nearly so intelligent and well shot. This film is being released in Blu-Ray soon, and I can't wait. The staggering images, important story, and impressive performances will show people that this long, wrongly reviled film is actually a masterpiece.

It's a tragedy that this film died on initial release, because the nearly four-hour director's original cut (thankfully the version on DVD) is an amazing epic. This is a cllllassic.

Chef-d'oeuvre. Film d'une ambition demesuree, Cimino y traite toute l'ambiguite de l'histoire de l'Amerique. De l'echelle individuelle, existentielle, a celle de toute la civilisation occidentale, le film montre avec cruaute l'immense fosse creuse entre l'espoir qui a forge ce nouveau monde et la realite extremement violente, quasi ineluctable, de cette conquete. L Amerique comme l'Homme est faite de ce paradoxe. Et nous echouerons tous, incapables de juguler cette violence, aux portes du paradis.
