Heaven's Gate (1980)

Harvard graduate James Averill serves as the sheriff of prosperous Jackson County, Wyoming, standing at the center of a conflict between impoverished immigrants and affluent cattle farmers. Politically connected ranchers enlist mercenary Nathan Champion—who is also vying for the affections of local madam Ella Watson—to combat the immigrant uprising. As tensions escalate, both Averill and Champion start to question their decisions.

[VIDEO ESSAY] "Heaven's Gate" is an unforgettable film full of heartfelt sincerity and pointed commentary about America's bloody history of hypocrisy, greed, and racism.

So extravagant on the production cost that it bankrupted a studio and trampled upon by critics upon release, calling it an unqualified disaster and the most scandalous cinematic waste, Michael Cimino's western that is based loosely on Wyoming's 1892 Johnson County War is epic in both grandeur and grandiloquence, and only with the passage of time will tell it is to be revered or ridiculed.

One of my all timwe favourites and the film which made me realise what a great art form the cinema could be. What particularly stick in my mind is the way that the "dance" set pieces punctuate the film, all that careering around in circles.

Considering the BAD movies that have been made just in the past five years, there is no way that this one ranks among the worst. This film is clearly a victim of it's reputation rather than it's deficiencies. Stunningly beautiful cinematography, breathtaking scope and a great slice of little known history make this one that should be seen rather than shunned. If you want to know more, seek out the "Final Cut" documentary on YouTube.
