It is really interesting to see a modern foreign homage to the western genre, and this one comes from the crazed mind of Takeshi Miike. Like most of his movies, the pacing is kinda strange, but there's enough strangeness, and interesting stuff to keep you enjoying yourself. A strange hodge-podge of western and samurai genres, with cartoon noises, crazy japanese stuff, and all engrish dialog. Come to think of it, it might be the Miike film I've enjoyed the most so far.

I have to say I'm pretty surprised how much I liked this movie. It's a definite western, but it's as if the Japanese had migrated to the west coast long before the Europeans did, which means there's a combination of six shooters, cowboys, and saloons styled in Japanese architecture. Everyone has thick Japanese accents, but they're speaking English and they're all using western style cliches, which makes it all the more enjoyable when you catch them. The gun fights are very reminiscent of classic martial art fight scenes (except with guns, obviously), and there's still even a little sword play too. Overall, it's not a mind-blowing movie, but it's definitely worth the watch. I mean, if you like kung-fu westerns, of course.

I'm a long time fan of Miikae's , which is odd considering that I don't generally like horror films. This movie, perhaps his most linear to date, is brilliant, although certainly more of a game he's playing with Tarantino than a true Miike original. Watching this film somewhat reminds me of The Five Obstructions, in which two directors get together to challenge one another's conventions. Fans of either director may not enjoy the film, (Miike is playing it far too conservative and Tarantino is experimenting with subtlty) but fans of both should find it gratifying. Trying to trace all the inter-textual references could make for a great drinking game

This was a live anime... pure and simple. This was also one of the strangest movies I've seen... but I loved that! While I wish the film had been made in Japanese, I can see what the director was going for--a full American western effect, complete with English slang and one-liners. The fight scenes were very well done, though I wish the final fight had been longer, and one thing I love about the Japanese is that they know how to make a movie beautiful.
