Winchester '73 (1950)

Lin McAdam rides into town on the trail of Dutch Henry Brown, only to find himself in a shooting competition against him. McAdam wins the prize, a one-in-a-thousand Winchester rifle, but Dutch steals it and leaves town. McAdam follows, intent on settling his old quarrel, while the rifle keeps changing hands and touching a number of lives.

I'm not a big fan of westerns, but this was great.

The story is a bit clunky at the beginning and it's conceit is underwhelming. However, fantastic dialog, great performances, and a ripping 3rd act more than make up for this.

One of my favorite Stewart Westerns, this one helps set the standard for a lot of later work. A classic revenge story, with lots of interconnecting sub plots. Truly worthwhile story telling. Plus when Jimmy Stewart gets mad...its just awesome.
