The Great Ecstasy of Robert Carmichael (2005)

In a small English coastal town, three teenage boys are drawn into a world of temptation and violence. Bored, troubled and excluded, the boys are unable to accept or even recognise moral boundaries. Every character in this is totally unsympathetic. Given the gratuitous violence at the end (which I suppose is meant to make some social statement) I'm not very sympathetic towards the other people involved either. The film tries to be serious and hints at something more until the end when it's revealed that actually, the makers are simply a little bit sick.

Een arthouse-film zoals geen ander. Beetje nihilistisch gefilmd, had beter gekund. Voor sommigen zeker een schokkende film.

Rookie director Thomas Clay gives us a cinematic punch-in-the-face that is both real and violently unsettling.

This movie is definitely more violent than clockwise orange but doesn't have as many layers. The story was concluded in bloody rape and left there no hope at all. Not a pleasant experience for me watching it.
