The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965)

During the Italian Renaissance, Pope Julius II contracts the influential artist Michelangelo to sculpt 40 statues for his tomb. When the pope changes his mind and asks the sculptor to paint a mural in the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo doubts his painting skills and abandons the project. Divine inspiration returns Michelangelo to the mural, but his artistic vision clashes with the pope's demanding personality and threatens the success of the historic painting.

Rome 1508: Pope Julius II wages war and commisions works of art all for the greater glory of God and the Church. Amongst the artists he commisions is Michelangelo (Charlton Heston), a headstrong sculpture. For his newest commision Julius wants Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chaple, something Michelangelo is dead set against. A battle of wills begins between the two men yet Michelangelo becomes consumed by the ceiling, suffering for the completion of what will be his master work. The Agony and The Ecstasy is an amazing, if somewhat long, film. Heston (one of the greatest actors ever IMHO) is amazing as the artist so consumed by his craft to endure the scorn of those around him and live apart from the only woman who could ever love him. Rex Harrison is Hestons equal as Julius.Harrison is convincing as the vainglorious, yet devout, pope, who finds in Michelangelo a man of greater faith then his own. One of the best historical epics ever.

An unsung masterwork from Carol Reed, the story of Michelangelo and the agony and the ecstasy of a genius producing a masterpiece against his will. Highly recommended!

Rex Harrisonâ??s portrayal of Pope Julius II who did put manner into Michelangelo played Charleston Heston to make the Sistine Chapel proper and reverent for the entire Catholic World.

"I am sculptor not a painter," cries Chuck in desperation to Pope Rex Harrison. I love artist biopics and this movie inspires whilst perpetuating the struggling artist myth. If you've seen "Bowling for Columbine" it's hard to forget that Mr Heston in real life comes across as a guntoting fascist but if you can you will certainly enjoy this piece of Hollywood Hokum!
