The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965)

During the Italian Renaissance, Pope Julius II contracts the influential artist Michelangelo to sculpt 40 statues for his tomb. When the pope changes his mind and asks the sculptor to paint a mural in the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo doubts his painting skills and abandons the project. Divine inspiration returns Michelangelo to the mural, but his artistic vision clashes with the pope's demanding personality and threatens the success of the historic painting.

A historical, quasi religious, character piece, bordering on epic proportions. With the exception of the Michelangelo biography that starts the movie it is reasonably well written and well made. It is also fun to watch Rex Harrison act circles around Heston.

I enjoyed the first half...the painting of the Sistine Chapel got a bit long, but perhaps thats fitting. It'd be a winner for an Art History class.

Rome 1508: Pope Julius II wages war and commisions works of art all for the greater glory of God and the Church. Amongst the artists he commisions is Michelangelo (Charlton Heston), a headstrong sculpture. For his newest commision Julius wants Michelangelo to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chaple, something Michelangelo is dead set against. A battle of wills begins between the two men yet Michelangelo becomes consumed by the ceiling, suffering for the completion of what will be his master work. The Agony and The Ecstasy is an amazing, if somewhat long, film. Heston (one of the greatest actors ever IMHO) is amazing as the artist so consumed by his craft to endure the scorn of those around him and live apart from the only woman who could ever love him. Rex Harrison is Hestons equal as Julius.Harrison is convincing as the vainglorious, yet devout, pope, who finds in Michelangelo a man of greater faith then his own. One of the best historical epics ever.

The Agony and the Ecstasy is an excellent film. It is about Michelangelo's troubles while painting the Sistine Chapel at the urging of Pope Julius II. Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison give fantastic performances. The screenplay is well written. Carol Reed did a great job directing this movie. I enjoyed watching the drama and history. The Agony and the Ecstasy is a must see.
