The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965)

During the Italian Renaissance, Pope Julius II contracts the influential artist Michelangelo to sculpt 40 statues for his tomb. When the pope changes his mind and asks the sculptor to paint a mural in the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo doubts his painting skills and abandons the project. Divine inspiration returns Michelangelo to the mural, but his artistic vision clashes with the pope's demanding personality and threatens the success of the historic painting.

Este es un excepcional filme que narra la singular relación que compartieron el Papa Julio II y el artista Miguel Angel, cuando el primero le encargó al segundo que pintara el techo de la recién construída Capilla Sixtina. Miguel Angel es un escultor y se siente ofendido de ser encomendado para una tarea que no le interesa, mientras que el Papa Julio II se encuentra ocupado liderando las cruzadas, por lo que el filme muestra con gran efectividad este choque de personalidades, de criterios diferentes, de opiniones distintas, pero que al final de todo este estira y encoje y discusiones sin fin, se plasmó una de las obras de arte más espectaculares y famosas que el mundo ha contemplado. "Cuándo terminarás?" "Cuando termine." Altamente recomendada.

This is an interesting story. The DVD begins with a short documentary of Michelangelo's sculptures - totally amazing work! The movie is a sad story of a man who doesn't want to paint, but is forced to by a very un-Christian pope. My favorite scene is Michelangelo arguing with the cardinals about painting naked people on the ceiling of a church. Very funny, good points made by the artist. :) For such an amazing piece of art, the story behind it is horrible.

Well told telling of the story of how the Sisteen Chapel came to been painted, with Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison both giving great performances and an incredible look to the painting when it is all said and done.
