The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965)

During the Italian Renaissance, Pope Julius II contracts the influential artist Michelangelo to sculpt 40 statues for his tomb. When the pope changes his mind and asks the sculptor to paint a mural in the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo doubts his painting skills and abandons the project. Divine inspiration returns Michelangelo to the mural, but his artistic vision clashes with the pope's demanding personality and threatens the success of the historic painting.

I enjoyed the first half...the painting of the Sistine Chapel got a bit long, but perhaps thats fitting. It'd be a winner for an Art History class.

Earnest, though somewhat stagey treatment of the classic novel, with Harrison's Pope Julius squaring off with Heston's Michelangelo. Obviously many liberties were taken with historical facts for dramatic purposes (that's always the case with films like this). Adversarial relationship between Harrison and Heston is the chief draw here, with Rex chewing up a little less scenery than Charlton. The scene where Heston receives inspiration for the 'Creation of Man' would strike some as unintentionally funny.

Very good film by director Carol Reed about the story behind the painting of the Sistine Chapel. It is ultimately the story of the personal battle between two men, the powerful Pope Julius II and the proud Michelangelo Buonarroti. It contains marvelous works of art, the first 15 minutes of the film being a sort of documentary about Michelangelo's work, and beautiful sights of medieval/Reinassance Italy.

I truly loved this movie as it protrayed Charles Heston as the great artist Michaelangelo and Mr. Rex Harrison as the waring pope Julius II who is like a true father to him, but at times causes him great surffering as he will not permit him to finish his work! It is only when the pope has been injured in battle that he permits Michaelangelo to do what he wants. I foundl it quite interesting how they displayed the strained relationship between these to strong-willied and dominating powers, each one wanting do do something different from the other, for anyone who is into art and love to fight for what they believe for the sake of it I would truly reccommend seeing this movie
