The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965)

During the Italian Renaissance, Pope Julius II contracts the influential artist Michelangelo to sculpt 40 statues for his tomb. When the pope changes his mind and asks the sculptor to paint a mural in the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo doubts his painting skills and abandons the project. Divine inspiration returns Michelangelo to the mural, but his artistic vision clashes with the pope's demanding personality and threatens the success of the historic painting.

Not much that's accurate but a visually stunning performance, including one of Sean Connery's ex-wives.

What makes this film fascinating is the conflict between the two characters, which is centered mostly on a great dialogue that explores the motivations and creative process of a genius, with Charlton Heston delivering his typical overacting and Rex Harrison as magnetic as always.

Well told telling of the story of how the Sisteen Chapel came to been painted, with Charlton Heston and Rex Harrison both giving great performances and an incredible look to the painting when it is all said and done.

Charlton Heston anything this guy touches turns to gold; the story of Michelangelo, a tormented artist forced into service, much like most of his roles he's always the underdog who eventually comes out on top by the end of the movie.
