An uncommonly cerebral version of a sword-and-sandal epic. Not quite as good as it's progeny Gladiator but well-made and very entertaining, nevertheless. Alec Guiness was a natural choice for Marcus Aurelius and Plummer really established himself in Hollywood in a superb performance as Commodus. A bit long considering it's emphasis on dialogue over action but I would rather watch 4 hours of this than 2 hours of most contemporary historical epics.

as anachronistic as its remake (gladiator). however solid entertainment for everyone who appreciates a good chariot race, some rattling shortsword or a stiff senate speech. besides, watching Alec Guiness as wise emperor Marcus Aurelius you can already feel Obiwan's spirit - may the force be with him ;)

Commodus, played here by the flamboyant Christopher Plummer, forsakes the Pax Romana and turns Rome into an empire of camp.

Dramatic, compelling and historically accurate. Well worth a look.

Big Epic Larger than life Enormous Long Movie about the downfall of the roman empire. Includes thousands of actors, a real replica of Forum Romanum (bulit in Spain) and well equiped soldiers and good looking romans. And of course Sophia Loren in her role as hot Bambi turning up everywhere in the movie as sad, confused or angry. It doesn't get more epic than this, but it's way to long. I watched the 2h 52min version and that could have been cut down a lot. Largely not at all historically accurate. The spoken introduktion to the movie promises accuracy but after a while the producer and writer turns the history as they want, and the ending is just weird. Nevertheless interesting and worth watching
