Masterpiece of Queer Cinema. Todd Haynes is a genius. It works on so many levels, commenting simultaneously on 1950s Hollywood melodramas, issues that could not be explored in a movie during that time, how far we've come or fallen from 1957 to 2002, whether your sexual preference or race defines who you are as a human being, the rot underneath the "normal" American family, and so much else. This film is a masterpiece.

A perfect homage to and reinvention of the movie melodrama, not funny very often because there is such heartbreak in the material. The world Haynes re-creates in this movie is so vivid and true to period that when Dennis Quaid uttered the word 'fuck' the first time, I actually felt something akin to shock. Profoundly moving performances, technically faultless.
