Cross of Iron (1977)

It is 1943, and the German army—ravaged and demoralised—is hastily retreating from the Russian front. In the midst of the madness, conflict brews between the aristocratic yet ultimately pusillanimous Captain Stransky and the courageous Corporal Steiner. Stransky is the only man who believes that the Third Reich is still vastly superior to the Russian army. However, within his pompous persona lies a quivering coward who longs for the Iron Cross so that he can return to Berlin a hero. Steiner, on the other hand is cynical, defiantly non-conformist and more concerned with the safety of his own men rather than the horde of military decorations offered to him by his superiors.

A great portrayal of the futility, madness and weirdness of war, and portrayed on the battlefields where the war was decided.

Greatest war movie of all time. Without the great explosions and shooting this one shows the true trauma that creeps to the men in war. Coburn is excellent, Maximillian Schell wonderful. Macho-Peckinpah reveals a total pacifist side in him and the ending can be single handedly vote as the most greatest portrait of the stupidity of war in all cinema.

Just a great war movie, actually very anti-war which if we look at the trend makes a better war movie anyway...not all that close to the book but the battle scenes are filmed in a tense gripping manner...unusual for the time it was filmed...although "Bridge Too Far" was also trying to be realistic and anti-war...

it's all about the violence, but in the most artistically accomplished way you could imagine, the simple use of brutality is such a successful motif in this film, achieving perfectly the films aim; to abhor the audience of the evils of extreme politics, ideology , modern warfare, militarism and society in general the way 19th century thinkers envisaged it; everything for the state (no matter how insane) and the man means nothing. p.s. subtlety is not a word peckinpah comprehends!.

Great film. Told fromt he perspective of the Germans on the Russian front. It is quite simply a beautiful film. Coburn is fantastic - Steiner is a god damn hero man!
