Cross of Iron (1977)

It is 1943, and the German army—ravaged and demoralised—is hastily retreating from the Russian front. In the midst of the madness, conflict brews between the aristocratic yet ultimately pusillanimous Captain Stransky and the courageous Corporal Steiner. Stransky is the only man who believes that the Third Reich is still vastly superior to the Russian army. However, within his pompous persona lies a quivering coward who longs for the Iron Cross so that he can return to Berlin a hero. Steiner, on the other hand is cynical, defiantly non-conformist and more concerned with the safety of his own men rather than the horde of military decorations offered to him by his superiors.

Sam Peckinpah sacrificed everything and lived in a trailler to make films - really understood about killing and what it really means to be a hero!

Actually quite a good movie! Completely unexpected War flick, that was more about the lives and tribulations of the soldier in the eastern front, than about a war. While the sounds, effects, and deaths were somewhat...dated, a lot went into this piece to portray war as another reality to live through altogether. Quite epic, and personally moving. The ending (the laughter) was an interesting twist, and makes you come out with your own message. A+

Peckinpah's best movie. All characters in this movie are destined to get killed, but they are even optimistic to their death as if they know that that's the only way to get out of the nightmare of Russian front.
