Cross of Iron (1977)

It is 1943, and the German army—ravaged and demoralised—is hastily retreating from the Russian front. In the midst of the madness, conflict brews between the aristocratic yet ultimately pusillanimous Captain Stransky and the courageous Corporal Steiner. Stransky is the only man who believes that the Third Reich is still vastly superior to the Russian army. However, within his pompous persona lies a quivering coward who longs for the Iron Cross so that he can return to Berlin a hero. Steiner, on the other hand is cynical, defiantly non-conformist and more concerned with the safety of his own men rather than the horde of military decorations offered to him by his superiors.

This is a gem of a war movie from the master of testosterone filmmaking. Its original perspective, solid storyline, great performances and trademark Peckinpah action scenes add up to what is one of the best films of the genre. The real tragedy is that this is the only war movie Sam Peckinpah.

Ah yes, my Dad made me watch this when i was about 5 and it became a favourite of mine - no wonder i'm desesitised. Peckinpah is famous for his slow motion blood pouring out of body shots. Fantastic actin and portrayal of the Russian From the German Perspective

One of the greatest war films ever made, made even better due to it being from the German perspective, its gritty,bloody and has fantastic set of actors

Great film. Told fromt he perspective of the Germans on the Russian front. It is quite simply a beautiful film. Coburn is fantastic - Steiner is a god damn hero man!
