First off: wow, I never knew the details of the case and assumed that Polanski left the country because he thought he was going to be convicted. Turns out, he admitted to fucking a minor (including...how do I put this...in the back of a volkswagen), plead guilty then wasn't happy with what his sentence was going to be. So, he's a pervert, let's get beyond that. Very fascinating movie, delves a little bit into who Polanski was, how he was changed by Sharon Tate's murder. Asks a lot of questions (Why would the mother of the girl leave her alone with partier/womanizer Polanski? Why would Polanski get the slap on the wrist he got? What was up with the vindictive judge? Why was the european press so quick to support him while trying to smear the THIRTEEN YEAR OLD victim?) but doesn't provide any easy answers. Very good movie, overall, though it could have been a bit shorter, I think.

An enthralling and captivating piece of work. It certainly doesn't gloss over Polanski's crime - far from it. It's presented via stark snippets of testimony - both his and his victim's. And she is given ample screen time, in which she comes across with a quiet dignity. But at the same time Polanski is definitely a charismatic and engaging character. Clips of multiple interviews reveal him to be charming, arrogant, mischievous and most certainly highly talented. The lawyers are astonishing in their candour, honesty and dignity - in stark contrast to some elements of the press and most shockingly the presiding judge.

Well researched and well sequenced film that is as even-handed as it can be without being able to provide an interview with the judge. Biographies of the key players are balanced nicely with the events of the trial. The use of footage from Polanski's films in new contexts has hit-and-miss success, but that's more than made up for with stunningly personal archival footage and well conducted interviews.

A well made documentary that succeeds by trying to stay impartial in its opinions on Polanski and the accusations made against him. Instead it opens up the case and the sham that it was. Allowing media coverage and reputation to influence the trial all along. Helped by honest testimonies by both sets of attorneys and the infamous girl in question.
