The Duellists (1977)

In 1800, as Napoleon Bonaparte rises to power in France, a rivalry erupts between Armand and Gabriel, two lieutenants in the French Army, over a perceived insult. For over a decade, they engage in a series of duels amidst larger conflicts, including the failed French invasion of Russia in 1812, and shifts in the political and social systems of Europe.

wonderful. a great cast - vignettes a go-go. great photography and Harvey Keitel a compelling dark presence

This is the most visually stunning movie I have ever see. The interior scenes remind me of Caravaggio. Story's good too; unsurprising since it was written by Joe Conrad

Good movie. The man, Ridley Scott, as a rookie director! His first feature, that got him 'Alien,' is a great story. It's just fun to watch. Another director could have easily destroyed it, but Scott stamped his style on it to give it some grit.

A pair of antagonists from the Napoleonic era going at it with pointy swords? Somebody is gonna get hurt. For honor indeed! Some of the cinematography is artistically amazing and snapshots of some scenes could pass as works from art masters of the era.

The pacing may strike you as odd at times, but the sheer beauty of the film - especially when used as a foil to the story of the two men - makes it one of my favourite Ridley Scott films.
