Alas, the human stories that Tolstoy told so significantly in the book are sketchy and inconsequential, despite the time devoted to them.

Despite epic cast, just does not do justice to Tolstoy, very long in spite not capturing much of the essence of the book--better done as a mini-series I think, and I just can't understand the casting and accents for these characters. As much as I like them elsewhere, this isn't culturally Russian enough.This should be done in Russian and French the way it was written. Oh well, I'll always love Audrey Hepburn at any rate.

Audrey Hebourne manages to convey that Natasha loves Pierre, even when her character doesn't yet know it. One of the best things about war and peace is the way that characters are molded in the furnace of war. This movie proved to be very touching and eloquent. Pierre and Natasha were played to the best effect.

I loved the book and I loved the movie. Tolstoy's sure is a man of vision.

It's not the novel. Other directors captured the novel. Still, this towering achievement from King Vidor stands as an overlooked grand hollywood epic that outdoes anything from it's era in craftsmanship if not sheer, breathtaking scale.
