Ghosts (2014)

Helene Alving leads an outwardly contented life. On the eve of the 10th anniversary of her husband's death, she is about to open an orphanage as a memorial to him. To mark this occasion, her bohemian painter son Oswald has returned from Paris. Helene plans to take the opportunity to tell Oswald the truth about his father. But ghosts of the past erupt during an eventful evening, bringing the facade of civilised family life crashing down.

About 10 times better than a Nick Broomfield documentary. As a tale of human tragedy told through the lives of individual people I thought it was excellent, and helped highlight the hardships that many immigrants endure when attempting to create a better life for themselves in the UK, and their families back home. Shed a considerable amount of light on a news story I didn't know a great deal about.

This movie was half a film, half a documentary... extremely slow, not well directed. The real thing about it is the sad (and true) story of illegal immigration behind it.

This is a heartbreaking, but necessary, story. It is unsettling to realise that all the cheap clothes and food we now enjoy in this country is feuled by the exploitation of these desperate people. I was also very suprised to find in the credits, Ai Qin played herself. I cant imagine what it must be like, having gone through all this, then to re-enact it all again. A very courageous woman who I have utmost respect for.

A smooth transition into scripted narrative for director Nick Broomfield. Ghosts is a powerful take on the Morecambe Bay tragedy of 2004. The casting is nothing short of genius, at times you feel privileged to be allowed into these 'people's real lives', before reminding yourself that it's not documentary.
