Yojimbo (1961)

A nameless ronin, or samurai with no master, enters a small village in feudal Japan where two rival businessmen are struggling for control of the local gambling trade. Taking the name Sanjuro Kuwabatake, the ronin convinces both silk merchant Tazaemon and sake merchant Tokuemon to hire him as a personal bodyguard, then artfully sets in motion a full-scale gang war between the two ambitious and unscrupulous men.

More great Kurosawa-Mifune brilliance. A classic and entertaining samurai film with splendid characters and Mifune at his most mesmerizing and splendid.

If there's a category for most single handedly influential film of all time, this would be on top. The first spaghetti western, an original rice noodle archetype.

Wow. Kurosawa was an absolute genius film-maker. This film was spectacular, not to mention ground-breaking and inspirational for many film-makers afterward. Great plot, incredible direction, cinematography, and editing, and some very fine acting.

It is impossible to watch this movie and not concede that Akira Kurosawa was, in fact, the man. The story itself has been lifted by so many other movies (though interestingly, this itself is an adaptation of a Dashiell Hammett crime novel -- who knew?), but it still seems fresh and brilliant here. The fights are amazing, the cinematography (as is true of all of Kurosawa's works) is godlike, and dammit, the whole thing's just FUN (and that's something that's NOT true of much of the man's work). So there you are.
