The Drowning Pool (1975)

Harper is brought to Louisiana to investigate an attempted blackmail scheme. He soon finds out that it involves an old flame of his and her daughter. He eventually finds himself caught in a power struggle between the matriarch of the family and a greedy oil baron, who wants their property. Poor Harper! Things are not as straight-forward as they initially appeared.

Harper returns. As good as the first one. It has one of the most mad escape attempts ever in it, that's not really suited for the film. Still, all is good with this one.

An excellent sequel to Harper. It takes everything great from the first film without being repetitive. Paul Newman delivered a great performance as did a young Melanie Griffith. The story was extremely intriguing and entertaining, while also having a light hearted, comedic tone. Stuart Rosenberg made a film that isn't just fluff, it's extremely well made. If you enjoyed the first, I can't see you not liking this.

The sequel to 1966's Harper, this thriller from 1975 is an extremely average affair, so much so that there's barely anything thrilling about it. Paul Newman is okay in his role, but by his standards it's a below-par performance. Maybe he was as bored by the film as audiences ended up being.

Ecrit par Walter Hill et réalisé par Scott Rosenberg (deux noms qu'on associe avec une certaine qualité, habituellement), The Drowning Pool n'a pas vraiment d'intrigue centrée mais possède beaucoup de style et une atmosphère assez pesante dans un bayou typique de Louisiane. Si Paul Newman domine encore les débats, force est de constater qu'ils sont particulièrement peu intéressant cette fois-ci et que cette lutte de pouvoir entre un magnat du pétrole et l'ex du personnage principal n'a rien de passionnant. Hormis une bonne scène dans un appartement inondé, The Drowning Pool n'apporte rien de nouveau au genre, malgré un score remarquable.
