Good acting and creative camera work really shine in this noir drama. On DVD the commentary is extra special. a must see for all true movie fans.

Dick Powell may not be the most discussed Philip Marlowe on screen, but he got the role spot on in this one, while even managing to get cute.

A great adaptation of Marlowe far removed from Bogart. Much truer to Chandler's existential novel. Wonderful POV filmmaking by Dmytryk with voice over by Powell.

Really great for a bunch of people i've never heard of. The writing was really witty, the suspense was great, but there is enough humor to make the movie one of the best underrated films of 19watever decade (30s or 40s?) - love the part where he strikes the match on the statues butt

Raymond Chandler's influence on private detective fiction was such that his style and the genre as a whole essentially became one and the same. And so it is that films like this now feel very familiar, having been done and redone and spoofed over the years. But go back to 1944 and this is an excellent piece of film noir. The first-person narrative works well, far better than many imitators have done since, and the cast is strong and well-suited to this type of film. Most praise should go to Edward Dmytryk, who produced a very well-crafted piece of work here. I thought the sequences where Marlowe is knocked out and drugged up worked particularly well.
