Drowning by Numbers (1988)

Cissie Colpitts drowns her cheating husband and, in the ensuing cover-up, enlists the help of lonely coroner Henry Madgett, an old friend with a longstanding weakness for her charms. But when Cissie's daughter and granddaughter—both also named Cissie Colpitts—decide to resort to the same methods for solving conflicts with their own frustrating husbands, the women and their repeated appeals for help begin to wear on Madgett's conscience.

This is probably one of my favorite movies ever. I used to own a copy along with the soundtrack and screenplay. Michael Nyman was much cooler back then than when he did The Piano and other farces to follow. Definitely my favorite Greenaway film.

My personal favourite Greenaway film. As the synopsis states: "3 husbands are drowned by their wives". This is not hollywood trash, but an incredibly entertaining art film with a wonderful soundtrack by Michael Nyman. I miss the days of Greenaway and Nyman..

You'll like this if you're a fan of Peter Greenaway's other nonsense The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. Alternatively, you may be the type of person who finds entertainment in identifying the consecutive numbers from 1 to 100 that appear throughout the film. Or indeed you may just be an Aspergic who likes Greenaway's brand of surrealism. Drowning by Numbers was wasted on me - I simply didn't understand it.

It proceeds slowly and is not as mannerist as Draughtman's, but definitely more real, definitely crudely female! I wish the drowned were more worthy... ;-)
