Drowning by Numbers (1988)

Cissie Colpitts drowns her cheating husband and, in the ensuing cover-up, enlists the help of lonely coroner Henry Madgett, an old friend with a longstanding weakness for her charms. But when Cissie's daughter and granddaughter—both also named Cissie Colpitts—decide to resort to the same methods for solving conflicts with their own frustrating husbands, the women and their repeated appeals for help begin to wear on Madgett's conscience.

You'll like this if you're a fan of Peter Greenaway's other nonsense The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover. Alternatively, you may be the type of person who finds entertainment in identifying the consecutive numbers from 1 to 100 that appear throughout the film. Or indeed you may just be an Aspergic who likes Greenaway's brand of surrealism. Drowning by Numbers was wasted on me - I simply didn't understand it.

None-more-black comedy. Relentlessly bizarre characters in overtly theatrical situations; all framed in beautiful, painterly visual compositions. Plus there's tons of nudism! The number game is great fun, too.

This is my favorite Greenaway film and one of my favorite films of all-time. It's archaic but it's funny, it's tragic but never sentimental, it's brilliantly clever, beautifully shot and performed, and Michael Nyman delivers yet another sublime score. A masterpiece in experimental filmmaking.

I was susceptible young man when I saw this for the first time. It's Greenaway at his best: catalogueing life, celebrating women and doing all this against the background of hypnotic music.
