The Commitments (1991)

Jimmy Rabbitte, just a thick-ya out of school, gets a brilliant idea: to put a soul band together in Barrytown, his slum home in north Dublin. First he needs musicians and singers: things slowly start to click when he finds three fine-voiced females virtually in his back yard, a lead singer (Deco) at a wedding, and, responding to his ad, an aging trumpet player, Joey "The Lips" Fagan.

Commitments, adapted by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais from the Roddy Doyle book, exults in its own world. The characters, with their foibles and verbal joustings, are everything. There's something poetically sardonic in every sentence they utter.

This is a movie to love, that touches you in places you never suspected, that shows you that the road less traveled is the road to your dreams.

Bad things about T&M: the music at the ending is too loud and bombastic, and, with the montage over the credits detracts from the power (and don't worry, oh great "Ed", my lips are henceforth sealed)(Ed: Thanks, Gilbert...nice reviews, by the way). Good things about T&M: everything else.

The movie isn't about the band, really; it's about having a chance when the cards are stacked against it. It's about climbing out. When they sing those great soul songs, it feels like a better world for everyone and that's how Parker manages to get us into his box with him.

It's a very strange plot to many other movies. No flaws in the run and it's a mare life journey than a drama. The psychological aspect of the story is in the ubiquitous form in many families especially in US.It has addressed a flaw in basic human nature. By and by, brilliant movie making and sad the movies had an underrated score.
