Thomas Jerome Newton is an alien who has come to Earth in search of water to save his home planet. Aided by lawyer Oliver Farnsworth, Thomas uses his knowledge of advanced technology to create profitable inventions. While developing a method to transport water, Thomas meets Mary-Lou, a quiet hotel clerk, and begins to fall in love with her. Just as he is ready to leave Earth, Thomas is intercepted by the U.S. government, and his entire plan is threatened.

The 2001 of the 1970s. It is nothing like Kubrick's film but it has the same kind of visionary approach to the genre. Bowie and (especially) Clark are phenominal.

This movie is very difficult to follow for most, because it is not supposed to be chronological. Nic Roeg is experimenting with telling this story primarily through imagery, and emotion. Bowie is also amazing. This movie is kind of like a really great acid trip.

Fantastic. David Bowie shines along with a great cast. Roeg continues on his streak of producing wonderfully confusing films that force the viewer to think. It is a shame that the film was so heavily edited upon release in America. For anyone who wants to see this science-fiction masterpiece, I urge you to see the Criterion version and not the edited version (you'll thank me later).

The strangeness of Bowie (perfectly cast as the isolated androgynous alien) is matched by director Nicolas Roeg's editing, which creates a weird masterpiece.
