This is a contemporary film noir shot and directed skillfully by notorious enfant terrible Paul Schrader. Although the film depicts a series of characters more dislikeable than the others, Schrader masterfully uses these young spoiled, burn out / pretty faces and reveal shot after shots the lackluster lifestyle of these people. The cinematography by John DeFazio is superb and express perfectly the state of mind each of these characters seems to be trapped in. The editing is also extremely well executed and the soundtrack adds a touch of oddity, disturbance and moodiness to this modern, neo noir, glamorous and nightmarish venture behind the scene of movie making. This film is like an experience, a journey into a world of excess and volatile whims, the ugly mirror of an ungrateful, spoiled, egotistical and mean Hollywood youth, for whom 'no' is never an answer. What a punch.... no wonder so many people dislike this vitriolic portrait of a generation so lost in it's own decadence, it's almost insufferable.

On paper, the ingredients for an intriguing combo of life-art crossover, artistic schadenfreude and nihilist gloss. But lord, it's cheap and weak.

Apparently, small budget means nobody was paid to act. Except, surprisingly, Lohan, who really gives it her all all and from time to time that it quite good enough. In a film whose subject is the relationship between sex and power it seemed, well, a little naive to me. For those who have seen the movie I point you to the scene between Ryan and the director of the film in which he is due to appear. Then look at a similar scene in 54 between Ryann Phillipe's Shane and Mike Myer's Steve Rubell. I laughed out loud. I'm not sure at whose expense: Schrader's retro understanding of the dynamics of gay desire or Ellis's tacit admission to some serious internalized homophobia.

All performances register high, including Lohan and her husky voice, but Deen, even inhabiting a must-hate character, truly impresses as an actor who "gets" the craft and its nuances.
