The Call of the Wild (2020)

Buck is a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail delivery dog sled team—and later its leader—Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime, ultimately finding his true place in the world and becoming his own master.

Knowing this was coming for some time but without looking into it being based on the classic novel, imagined an intense thinking man's survival adventure like "The Revenant" and perfect for Harrison Ford as an action swan song of sorts only a rare very few could pull off at that age. Well, it's not that! From the trailer it was instantly clear the dog is not real and it's a problem even if many viewers don't outright realize it, they'll sense it (it does push the envelope technically and soon you won't be able to tell). Ford is as usual completely convincing. As legendary a mega star and great actor as he is, somehow he's still under-rated. This movie would rate slightly lower but for a good classical story, however unoriginal.

Ford doesn’t give a bad performance, but the dog does: the obvious fakery we can (maybe) overlook in a CG lion is far too glaring when it’s man’s best friend.

I thought the movie was really great and fun. You could instantly see that the dog is digital and there are lots of CGI, but it didn't influence the movie and it turned out great.

A sentimental but solid dependable retelling of an oft-told tale, it doesn’t do anything radical with the material but gets by on well mounted set-pieces and Ford’s grizzled gravitas.

You never believe Buck is the genuine article, so moments of danger and even cute mannerisms don’t land. Even the best-trained contestant at Westminster has some unpredictability.
