Subtle, savage and insightful but with such a big heart it is as moving as it is informative about the value of making art that moves.

In the end I think the message of this great film is a testament of the old adage about the camera stealing the soul. Also has that interesting technique of staring a movie with the end and then building the story from the beginning, which Quentin Tarantino popularized much later.

My favorite movie of all time. Gloria Swanson is terrific as Norma Desmond, a former silent-film star who is struggling with the fact that she is aging and not the beauty she once was. William Holden is great in this movie too. It is disturbing and wonderful. Check it out. My review doesn't do it justice. Not even close. "Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close up"

What a magnificent film. Gloria Swanson is incredible as the reclusive Silent star of a bygone age which she can't grow out of. Her mannerisms are trapped in a medium of over expression and makes her hopeless for the Talkies she craves to be accepted in. Billy Wilder is one of the masters. No question. How tragic and heartbreaking to see poor Norma oblivious to her failures and painful delusion. Perfection.
