Billy Wilder knows, perhaps better than any other filmmaker, how to end a movie, and Sunset Blvd. may be his most viable proof of that.

An out of luck screenwriter walks into a sinister mansion and meets a 50 year old egocentric, manipulative, and delusional actress who is ready for her big comeback to Hollywood. Welcome to Sunset Boulevard. A film that had made itself, William Holden, and Gloria Swanson legends that they are known today.

Sunset Boulevard is the greatest movie ever made about the dark side of making movies. Billy Wilder's brilliant direction matches the groundbreaking screenplay that he co-wrote, and actors William Holden and Gloria Swanson have never been better.

Donald Kirkley 24 Jan 1958

There's a long tradition of filmmakers poking fun at the movie business. But no one bit the hand that fed him more viciously or with sharper fangs than Billy Wilder in Sunset Boulevard.
