Powerful drama exploring the life of a few friends growing up in L.A. among the violence of South Central. The location is almost irrelevant and the central theme is a social one: determinism or individualism, the role of family and role figures in the shaping of one's life. A strong political message.

One of the most sadly underrated films of the 90's, Boyz n the Hood succeeds as a rich, compelling coming of age story, a chilling urban crime drama, a heart-wrenching tragedy and an eye-opening encyclopedia of social and ethical problems in America's black communities. Featuring engrossing performances and brilliantly complex characters, this film displays a level of confidence, thematic maturity and depth that, for a directorial debut, is simply astounding.

The great thing about this film is that it doesn't try to play up the "gangsta" lifestyle. It tries to present it in an objective way and became far better than the garbage that followed it. Singleton more than deserved his oscar nomination!

Maybe the most duplicated movie of the last twenty years besides The Matrix, and for good reason. This movie never gets old or outdated and is really a perfect drama.
