A highly maligned but ultimately highly enjoyable science fiction film, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was the first time that the venerable sci-fi franchise hit the silver screen, and there are some teething problems, but ultimately this is a gripping film. Featuring the original cast of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, James Doohan, George Takei and Walter Koenig, there's a lot of intrigue in this film, particularly in the big reveal of the identity of the films villian. An early effort, and a very commendable one.

The best Star Trek movie ever. Gets into some hard core Scifi that very few movies even try to do. It's slow paced, but that's what makes it incredible. Sure it does take inspiration from 2001, but see no problem with that.

Not the best film in the "Star Trek" franchise, but well worth watching--especially the 2000 Director's Cut, which includes deleted scenes, better editing, and additional footage with improved special effects. The recent DVD release of the Director's Cut is especially impressive in widescreen format with digital enhancement. Warp Speed, Mister Sulu!
