Far too many people, like Phil Hall, below, confuse uncle REMUS with uncle TOM. Song of the South is set AFTER the civil war, and no slaves make an appearance. This movie is also remarkable in that it was the first motion picture in the united states with a black man in the lead role. Don't let the Al Sharptons of the world confuse you into not seeking out this film. It's one of Disney's early best, an early experiment in making a feature length film combining live action and animation, leading to other films like Mary Poppins.

CLASSIC! GREAT FILM! My favorite of the Disney films! While I can see how some have a problem with the race issues in the film, I disagree with them. It had a totally opposite impact on me, as a young child. Who kept everything together, who taught the morals of life through unbelievable stories, and who CLEARLY had clearer values and sensibility - the Black workers (this is post-Civil War, they are not slaves). The White family is struggle with marital issues, they can't keep track of their kid, they ignore the kid and don't give him any respect. As a small child, my grandparents brought me to see this film during it's last re-release, and my take then and still now is that Uncle Remus was the patriarch of the plantation family - and in that family I melded the Black people AND the White people together as one community. Oh, and the cartoons are the BEST! I think there could be an interesting remake done with live action and PIXAR technology (plus more of Remus' tales)!

An old slave enchants a boy with stories that teach about life. Under all the controversy, this was a bold film about the power of fiction. Just like the generations before us, this Disney classic may one day be gone forever. Because of this I cherish it all the more.

this movie never shoild have been banned from the U.S. it may feature slaves but it is a really effing good childrens movie and its not racist... at all... it teaches children things they should learn and dont really get in todays media. screw the disney rasict nazis. the movie centers no how amazing this one black slave is. not gonna lie... thank god for illegally obtaining movies from crazy chinese men at fairs.
