This German made 1962 Sherlock Holmes film suffers from bad dubbing and a very cheap feel to it. Christopher Lee does make a good Holmes, and the scenes between him and his arch nemesis, Moriarty, are what save this fim from being really bad. Another thing I don't understand is why the film makers see fit to set in modern day England. The Universal Holmes films did this as well, with much more success than this picture. A curiosity for Holmes buffs more than anything. This film also has one of the worst scores ever produced for a film.

Christopher Lee makes this film bearable. He saves the day. I have seen the film a while ago, and that's what I remember the most: that the story is mediocre at best, but Lee is so talented he could make an awful script worthy enough to watch. His persona is perfect material for Holmes. His authority and substance fill the screen. Aesthetically, the picture is reminiscent of the silent films made in the first decades of cinema, a fitting atmosphere for a Sherlock Holmes adventure.
