Gene Wilder took over direction of the Mel Brooks crew somewhere between Blazing Saddles and Silent Movie and this resulting flick has been a favorite of mine since I first taped it off network TV when I was about 7. Frequently and unavoidably dismissed as a Brooksian knock-off, TAOSHSB is an overlooked gem with some truly memorable characters and sweet scenes.

Hilariously funny Gene Wilder film. Wilder is Sigerson Holmes, the younger bother of Sherlock. He takes on a case Sherlock has no time for. Cue the endless laugher, quick little quips and funny gags. It has a superb supporting cast which includes: Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn and Marty Feldman.

Definitely not Gene Wilder's best. This movie needed Mel Brooks bad.

Sadly, even with so much talent, the film is only fitfully funny. Seems to get back on its legs during the final opera sequence, but the whole thing cries out for Mel Brooks to whip it into shape. Albert Finney has a funny cameo, though.
