Scars of Dracula (1970)

The Prince of Darkness casts his undead shadow once more over the cursed village of Kleinenberg when his ashes are splashed with bat's blood and Dracula is resurrected. And two innocent victims search for a missing loved one... loved to death by Dracula's mistress. But after they discover his blood-drained corpse in Dracula's castle necropolis, the Vampire Lord's lustful vengeance begins.

Classic Hammer Horror!!! You've got Christopher Lee fighting Dennis Waterman from the classic TV show 'Minder', as well as Patrick Troughton who was freaking DOCTOR WHO, and busty British babes!! Whats not to like?

Dark and violent, but the special affects such as the silly looking bat on a string is a little too cheesey for me.

One of the mid period Hammer Drac-pics before they opted to mess about with the formulae and put him in the 1970s. The historic setting is well done (although they always appear to be in Germany rather than Transylvania) and the cast of B Movie and TV actors cope reasonably well with the script. Hammer obviously wanted to cash in on the growing trend for violent Grindhouse / Drive-In-Movies and threw in some rather bloody scenes including a graphic impalement and the nasty after effects of a vampire bat attack. Unfortunately they're let down by the aforementioned bat itself - relying on an obviously plastic puppet flapping about on strings. That aside it's a reasonable romp and at least Christopher Lee finally gets some dialogue.

The "Carry On" style romp early in the film along with the scene where the bat eats the face off of the priest are worth 5 stars in my book.
