One of the mid period Hammer Drac-pics before they opted to mess about with the formulae and put him in the 1970s. The historic setting is well done (although they always appear to be in Germany rather than Transylvania) and the cast of B Movie and TV actors cope reasonably well with the script. Hammer obviously wanted to cash in on the growing trend for violent Grindhouse / Drive-In-Movies and threw in some rather bloody scenes including a graphic impalement and the nasty after effects of a vampire bat attack. Unfortunately they're let down by the aforementioned bat itself - relying on an obviously plastic puppet flapping about on strings. That aside it's a reasonable romp and at least Christopher Lee finally gets some dialogue.

Probably the best Christopher Lee Dracula film outside of the original. Surprisingly full of sex and a lot of violence, this is one you probably shouldnt show to the kiddies. Women and men are impaled and the proceedings are awfully macabre. It's great though, and a definite improvement over the previous 2 movies. See this if you can!

Now that Hammer Studios are officially open for business, it's useful to see how the masters did it. Admittedly, this comes from an era where the Dracula myth was getting a bit tired, and, indeed, the plot is so cliched it almost falls into the "it's so bad, it's good" canon. Be that as it may, there are still things to enjoy in this film: Christopher Lee is a joy to watch, whether he plays Dracula, Rasputin or Saruman. The depiction of Dracula's castle shows its age but it is still very well done with an overabundance of the colour red. The women are annoyingly powerless and silly and they spend most of the film weakened by Dracula's hypnotic powers.(they don't teach you that in the ICH, I'm telling you that!) They are however, very attractive and conveniently dressed mostly in nightgowns. In other words, this has all the trademarks of a Hammer film, which makes it a must for the Hammer Horror fan. However, for the casual horror fan, or film fan this will appear slightly tedious and dated.

If you can, get the version of this that has the AWESOME interview with Christopher Lee on a seperate disc. :D The movie itself is kinda meh, but is fun and enjoyable Hammer fare. It could be better, however. :\
