Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966)

Whilst vacationing in the Carpathian Mountain, two couples stumble across the remains of Count Dracula's castle. The Count's trusted servant kills one of the men, suspending the body over the Count's ashes so that the blood drips from the corpse and saturates the blackened remains. The ritual is completed, the Count revived and his attentions focus on the dead man's wife who is to become his partner; devoted to an existence of depravity and evil.

The second Drac movie from Hammer with Christoper Lee, this one has the tightest script of the series. It offers the effective ploy of giving no lines to Lee, but just a few snarls, yet he's still the most active part in the show. This is completely to his credit since he refused to do the provided lines, since he thought they were terrible. The outside sets at Bray are effective and Andrew Kier as the Friar rocks.

The best Dracula film Hammer ever made, with the possible excpetion of it's predecessor, D:POD is great fun even today. Thorley Walters and Christopher Lee hand in the best performances, but everyone is superb, and Andrew Keir's Father Shandor does a great job as Van Helsing's replacement. Things do run out of a steam little at the end, with an exciting chase giving way to a rather crappy finale involving a frozen river getting shot up, but that's the only quibble I can have about this superb, and intensely likable, film.

Christopher Lee returns as the Count in the direct sequel to Horror Of Dracula. Even though this is the third film in the series. Dracula- Prince Of Darkness is a darker-creepier horror film than the previous two. Christopher Lee's performance is more beastly and animalistic than his take on the character in Horror and he has no dialogue. And he's scary! As always the sets and exterior shots are magnificent. And the always incredible talent of Terrence Fisher directs another fast, brutal and elegant film.

Christopher Lee doesn't have a lot to do, and this is far from his best outing as the Count. The whole thing is bizarrely sexually charged.
