It's not as obviously masterful as some of Ray's other films, it's at the very least an entertaining horse opera with Cagney close to his best.

A very watchable moralistic western with James Cagney's presence being key to its success.

It opens with three warnings against (contagious) too-eager gun-play (and finishes the same way) and one of the strangest ever train robberies, and features several (other) great Nicholas Ray touches (like a marriage proposal in jail), but its main theme is the typically 50's (but I think--and come to think of it, strangely--unusual for a western) one of juvenile delinquency.
