I found this film surprisingly funny for such an old, b&w Northern film which in my experience are usually about coal or rheumatism. It's not exactly full of jokes, rather based around amusing situations and witty dialogue brought about by Billy's compulsive and imaginative lies. Recommended.

A hilarious surreal dark comedy from the mind of John Schlesinger.

*** (out of four) The first half seems a bit forced and a little silly, but as the film goes it gains depth and ends up saying quite a bit about people who cannot deal with the real world. Tom Coutenay is a young man who envisions himself in various worlds, but he doesn't know how to deal with his reallife situations, so he makes up things. Julie Christie is warm and radiant in her film debut.
