Give in to the fantasy and it's a fun and fascinating ride that offsets moments of real pathos (from heartbreaking portraits of childhood rejection to him literally hitting bottom in his swimming pool) with scenes that definitely capture the exhilaration of becoming Elton John

Freddie Mercury may have had the better voice, but it’s Elton John who gets the better movie. Rocketman, director Dexter Fletcher’s trippy new biopic about the flamboyant rocker is braver, deeper and more enlightening than last year’s slobbering piece of Queen propaganda “Bohemian Rhapsody” (which he also partly directed).

Not only does Egerton have Elton’s look and mannerisms down to an uncanny degree, he also musters up enough of his subject’s signature showmanship to give a performance that’s joyously at peace with its own preposterousness.

Rocketman is a Musical Fantasy unlike Bohemian Rhapsody that is a biopic, that means that the characters start to sing and dance whenever expression of emotion is needed. That said, the songs match what the characters are feeling so do not match the actual timeline of Elton John's career, but that doesn't bother much unless you are a super fan that really cares about chronology. All that said it's a very good entreteining movie and a reminder of why you don't stay in touch with your ex.

I laugh at the reviews criticising this bio-epic for being an honest bio-epic but on the other hand, praising the Queen bio-epic despite that being mostly made up. I thought Egerton did a phenomenal job as Elton and he's actually singing the songs was a huge plus for me and something that Malak didn't do in Bohemian Rhapsody. Rocketman doesn't try to be a feel-good movie, It gives you a pretty in-depth look at who Elton was at various stages of his career and it was great to see him turn his life around. All in all, It's just a satisfying movie that offers a good blend of music and drama. It was everything that Bohemian Rhapsody should have been.
