Raining Stones (1993)

Proud, though poor, Bob wants his little girl to have a beautiful (and costly) brand-new dress for her First Communion. His stubbornness and determination get him into trouble as he turns to more and more questionable measures, in his desperation to raise the needed money. This tragic flaw leads him to risk all that he loves and values, his beloved family, indeed even his immortal soul and salvation, in blind pursuit of that goal.

This is what I like: small movies about little things that eventually turn out to look so large. Ken Loach has a knack for making the little things of life seem the most important and always uses a desolate landscape to paint us the beauty of humanity. A movie for survivors, whatever the cost.

My favourite Ken Loach Movie. An emotional rollercoaster ride which tells the story of a man desparately trying to find the money for his Daughters communion outfit. Tansey is possibly one of the nastiest men to hit the silver screen.

Brisk, richly characterized fiction that cuts as deeply and truly as any documentary. Without ever mentioning politics, Loach makes the most powerful and effective of political statements -- one that relies on subtlety and the intelligence of the audience.

Right from the very (symbolic) start, a brilliant, powerful, funny/sad account of the cost of religion to/for a/the working-class man (not least of all to his soul). Watch it with Killer of Sheep.
