The Baby of Mâcon (1993)

In 17th-century Tuscany, a church play is performed for the benefit of young aristocrat Cosimo. In the play, a grotesque old woman gives birth to a beautiful baby boy. Could not watch the whole film because it's way too intense, but the photography is to die for.

Amazes, delights, then makes you sick. I wish I'd made it.

It feels like Ken Russell with a budget and no humor. Peter Greenaway's vision has a strong point -- but it is presented in the most graphic and unsetting ways possible. This is strictly cult film fare.

this was probably the hardest movie I've ever sat down to watch but that being said it is somehow magnificent too. Julia ormond is an amazing actress and has always been far too underrated...this may be her best performance...she is amazing...her wickedness makes you dislike her but at the same time you can't help but feel for her when she is with the baby in his final scenes...thank god they didnt show the actual rape...i dont think i could've watched it. movie is not for the closed minded or faint of heart, but oh how spot on it is in so many ways!

Greenaway's direction is beautiful. Ormond and Fiennes put in great early performances in their careers in this twisty tale - keeping audiences alert as to which reality they are viewing what is going on.
