This is a magical film that is loaded with some really impressive imagery throughout. Cocteau takes the world as we know it, turning it into a magical realm where mirrors are turned into portals where the dead can entire the world of the living, and car radios pick up transmitions from this world after-death. The whole film's vision of life and death is incredibly impressive for the the time and it really sucked me completely into this world. It's a film that makes you really question the balance of life and death and how they are intertwine. The poet's journey into the world of the dead to save his wife was particularly great for me, the judge panel; the gloves, everything. If I had one problem with the film it would be that I never really felt a strong romantic connection between the our main protagonist, the poet, and his wife, who was killed by lady death. Otherwise, it does pretty much exactly what I want out of film; it transports the viewer into another world and while fantastical, it still rings true in everyday life.

little more can be said about cocteau. this is yet another great, ethereal work from the poet of early cinema. great use of camera and editing tricks and a story only cocteau could imagine. also a nice part for francois perier and a cameo from jean-pierre melville.

One of the best movies ever done. So many wonderful lines.

A film that defies the conventions of classical Hollywood films and became considered a work of art that transcends the traditional confines of the cinema.

Another successful adaptation of a classical story from Jean Cocteau, who uses brilliant visual trickery to add colour to an already established story. The film would be very good without the tricks and this is the key to their success. There is a visual poetry always at work, as though Cocteau is using the camera as his pen and the flourishes as his rhyme.
