This film has incredible cinematography. I enjoyed the surrealists parts where the characters have flash back memories of the past and present. A classic 1950's version.

little more can be said about cocteau. this is yet another great, ethereal work from the poet of early cinema. great use of camera and editing tricks and a story only cocteau could imagine. also a nice part for francois perier and a cameo from jean-pierre melville.

one of very few films on my list that i immediately watched again. this is absolute perfection in the art of visual storytelling. it is every bit as inventive as 'citizen kane.' what seems to start as a standard 1950's character-based drama quickly shifts gears when major characters begin walking through mirrors. the visual effects are almost entirely in-camera, and are so creatively executed, that i had to watch them several times to dissect how it was done. but beyond the image trickery, the story is a solid (and interestingly layered) retelling of the orpheus myth, using the framework to comment on the fragile state of marital relationships. maria casares is magnificent as 'death,' and in a trick peter greenaway stole for 'the cook, the thief..,' her costume changes from black to white depending on her psyche. tricks aside, it is her performance that is most arresting. her small but pivotal role in 'children of paradise' is also worth checking out.

One of the best movies ever done. So many wonderful lines.

A film that defies the conventions of classical Hollywood films and became considered a work of art that transcends the traditional confines of the cinema.
