Black Orpheus (1959)

Young lovers Orfeu and Eurydice run through the favelas of Rio during Carnaval, on the lam from a hitman dressed like Death and Orfeu's vengeful fiancée Mira and passing between moments of fantasy and stark reality. This impressionistic retelling of the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice introduced bossa nova to the world with its soundtrack by young Brazilian composers Luiz Bonfá and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

Wonderful movie. Only complaint: if you cut out all the dancing, this movie is like 20 minutes long. Other than that, brilliant retelling of the Orpheus myth.

This movie's ending ALMOST brought me to tears.

This movie is a bizarre cult classic. It takes place in Brazil (circa '59). It's during carnival in Rio. The movie gets weird when death shows up and voodoo rituals take place. Great Soundtrack!

it's strange but it's always interesting... and kindof poetic
