There’s no tortured drama, no grand revelation. The movie is funny in the gentlest way, and how could it not be? Coppola’s script is built around Murray’s deadpan savoir faire, with Jones’ forthright radiance as a foil.

Sofia Coppola returns to basics with 'On the Rocks'. Reflecting on the midlife crisis, the struggles of marriage, and the difficulty of relationships between fathers and daughters, the director delivers a funny and thoughtful film. It sure has its out-of-place moments, like the travel to Mexico sequence, but overall this is a good movie.

I can't say that Sofia Coppola is a bad filmmaker, but I must admit that after three years, her new bet is something that feels too passive for its own good. This movie is basically a sitcom, and sadly, more is expected from Bill Murray than from Coppola herself or Rashida Jones. And it's that basically once you do the final sum, the only reason why this very rudimentary story receives more attention than it really deserves, is due to the protagonists and the director and when all three of them are only playing in their automatic mode, you can't help but feel disenchanted. Competent enough to pass the time. Notably forgettable for the careers of everyone involved.

On the Rocks isn’t Coppola’s most momentous film — it’s a little too frothy, all crackle and no pop — but its near lackadaisical tone and a delightful Murray performance make it an entertaining watch. It goes down like a smooth glass of wine, with perhaps a little bit of tartness.
