Lightning doesn't strike twice as this sequel falls completely flat on its face. A lot of the same from the first movie, but somewhat different in tone. Even Geilgud's ghostly appearance in this movie can't save this film. But I enjoyed it.

Arthur 2 makes the big mistake of thinking everyone loved Arthur because of Dudley Moore's drunken antics. Sure they were a big part of that film's success, but only because they were balanced by Gielgud's mocking tone. With Gielgud reduced to playing a "ghost" for ten minutes, Arthur 2 ruins the balancing act. Now, it's Dudley Moore, drunking it up for almost two hours, without anyone putting him in his place (except with Ghost Gielgud shows up). It's too much, and while Minnelli does a fine job, she's given little more to do than be charmed by Moore's buffoonery. When Gielgud shows up, you realize how important he is to the success of the movie. His witty one liners and pithy delivery work so well, you forgive the fact that the movie has crossed into bizarro land by having Moore talking to a ghost.
