Of Gods and Men (2010)

A group of Trappist monks reside in the monastery of Tibhirine in Algeria, where they live in harmony with the largely Muslim population. When a bloody conflict between Algeria's army and Muslim Jihadi insurgents disrupts the peace, they are forced to consider fleeing the monastery and deserting the villagers they have ministered to. In the face of deadly violence, the monks wrestle with their faith and their convictions.

Finally got round to seeing this wonderful film, and wasn't disappointed. Of Gods & Men is based on a real incident from 1996 in Algeria when eight Trappist monks had to make a decision about whether or not to leave their monastery in the face of brutal intimidation from Islamic fundamentalists. Needless to say this did not have a happy ending. It was a story that gripped the people of France (and explains why this did so well at the French box office), but hardy noticed by the rest of the world; yet here are the seeds of 9/11 so eloquently expressed and without any heavy handed preaching. A skillful slow burner with an air of foreboding, Of Gods and Men shouldn't just appeal to those with a religious bias - even this old atheist found it very moving.

This is already the best movie of the year from a content and Christian point of view. There is unlikely to be anything close to this.
