I had avoided this movie after seeing mostly bad reviews, but I have to say this one blew me away: brilliant exploration of the creative process and its link to an artist's failing relationships. I was mesmerized by the film's ever-shifting perspectives, time-frames, and personas. All the characters drip with sex-appeal and pizzazz and authenticity. One of the best musicals ever, IMHO.

This musical creatively tells a story about an honored artist's spiritual odyssey. It's a soul's journey of a media frenzied Italian film director, ala Fellini, who has finally met himself in crisis and doesn't like what he has become. He is creatively and ethically bankrupt and must change or perish. At this precipice of his life music, song, dance and beautiful sets play out the emotions of the characters in such a way as to dramatically feel, almost grok, the depiction of the joys, sadness, mortality and resurrection of the infinite human spirit. It's the most brilliant use of the musical medium of film making since the Phantom. However, the flip side sorely seems to be that this musical is another pearl tossed before the swine of critics enamored with but the pornography of violence or the "Shock the Monkey" type of teenage pandering. So.......? I'm afraid we won't get many more of these wonderful creative gems of spiritual dimension.

A real joy. Although I didn't really like the songs they are vital in creating the alternative side to the story. It manages to avoid the deep gloom that is obviously behind the story thus making it watchable. There is no brightness at all but all the leading ladies bring beauty. Day-Lewis is again brilliant and even manages to get the accent in such a way that it can't be ridiculed. These days Dame Judi is at the stage in her career where she plays herself in a different outfit each time and is superlative.

I actually thought this was a very good film. I suppose a lot of people didn't "get" it but I think you really have to forget about the plot and let the movie carry you. It's directed by Rob Marshall who brought Chicago to the cinema and i could spot similarities between the two films. Daniel Day Lewis really surprised me with his musical theatre skills!
