Sherlock Holmes is drawn into the case of Jack the Ripper, who is killing prostitutes in London's East End. Bob Clark's last film before he directed PORKY'S (1982) was also his best. Sherlock Holmes versus Saucy Jack!

Christopher Plummer and James Mason are wonderful and warm together as Holmes and Watson. Sadly, the film has a terrible score, poor production values and long, long scenes needed to be edited.

A fond homage to the heyday of Hammer Studio, and a canny transmuting of Victorian Britannia to the tail end of the politicized '70s

I usually find sherlock movies more of a parody of itself half the time. This however is not, this is probably the best Sherlock Holmes movies I ever seen and Plummer delivers the Sherlock Holmes I would expect the literary character to be, heroine addict and all.

Plummer and Mason make a great Holmes and Watson. A little too serious for my tastes but fun nonetheless.
