Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation (1962)

Banker Roger Hobbs wants to spend his vacation alone with his wife, Peggy, but she insists on a family vacation at a California beach house that turns out to be ugly and broken down. Daughter Katey, embarrassed by her braces, refuses to go to the beach, as does TV-addicted son Danny. When the family is joined by Hobbs' two unhappily married daughters and their husbands, he must help everyone with their problems to get some peace.

Entertaining, yes, but also a bit of a throw-away comedy--which is sad, considering the amount of talent that was on the job. Worth watching just for Mr. Stewart's snarkier-than-thou role.

I always enjoy James Stewart. Here, he is the latter day incarnation in which he is the conservative father in a family gone mad, same as in TAKE HER SHE'S MINE (1963). This is the better film of the two. Though it feels a little meandering at times, there are several humorous scenes and a happy ending for all involved.

I first saw this back in '99. Which was ironic considering a certain part of the movie. This one is a great American family classic.

Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation falls in the back half of James Stewart's career, and it also falls in the front half of the 'dysfunctional family vacation' genre. Of course, if you've seen the essential ones before seeing this, chances are you may not find much distinction. But the second collaboration between mid-50s James Stewart and Harvey director Henry Koster has enough charm and comedy to drive this early vacation genre flick.
